Title: The Spirit of the Mimosa, by award-winning writer and director Tim Baker
Date: Thursday 9th June 2011
Location: Clwyd Theatr Cymru Theatre for Young People
Time: 7.00pm
Cost:
On 28 May 1865, during the Victorian era, the clipper ‘The Mimosa’ slipped slowly out of Albert Dock in Liverpool. Her destination was Patagonia, two months and three continents away, and her cargo was the entire possessions, hopes, dreams, religion and language of the 167 Welsh men and women who were travelling to build a new life. They had been promised an idyll in which to build a new Wales. The reality was very different.
The Patagonia story is the most famous migration in Welsh history, and against huge odds and desperate conditions, these brave migrants succeeded in creating a Welsh speaking community which still exists and thrives today, over 7,000 miles away. The trip in 1865 had been organised by a passionate Welshman, Edwin Cynrig Roberts, from Cilcain in Flintshire.
The most comprehensive account of the whole journey is Elvey Macdonald’s ‘Yr Hirdaith’. Elvey was born in Patagonia and is descended directly from Edwin Roberts, and has agreed to be historical adviser to this ambitious project.
Tickets for this performance are free for over 50s

Title: Celebrating the Older Dancer
Date: Thursday 26th May
Location: Theatr Felinfach
Cost: Tickets are available by calling Box Office on 01570 470697.
Rhuddem Dance Company, which is part of the Community Dance Programme at Theatr Felinfach, began in 2009 specifically for people aged 50+ years and work the same way that you would expect of any dance company, focusing on dance technique as well as developing creative, choreographic and performance skills.
Over the past eighteen months, they have performed on stage, directed by Catherine Young, Dance Officer for Theatr Felinfach, and taken part in a film created by Striking Attitudes Dance Company from Cardiff and funded by the Arts Council of Wales. The dancers are about to embark on yet another performance, due to generous financial support from Age Cymru’s Gwanwyn Festival, a national annual event which aims to promote the Creative Arts for older people.
This year’s performance will include a triple-bill with Striking Attitudes, who are a company of professional older dancers. We will see two brand new pieces of work and also a showing of a dance on film that was choreographed by Caroline Lamb, Artistic Director of Striking Attitudes.
Another of Theatr Felinfach’s dance company will accompany Rhuddem on stage during their performance this year. Cwmni Dawns Dwsin y Daith, a company comprised of young adults, have collaborated with Rhuddem to create a piece based on the movement patters of birds in flight.
For information on becoming a member of Rhuddem Dance Company, or are interested in setting up a similar company in your area, please contact the Theatre’s Dance Officer on 01545 572708.

Title: Oh What a Lovely War
Date: Saturday May 21st 2011
Location: Aberystwyth Arts Centre Youth and Community Theatre
Time: 2.00pm
Cost: Contact Venue
Special Gwanwyn performance – Saturday 21 May, 2pm.
Director: Richard Hull
Musical Director: Ric Lloyd
Choreographer: Rachel West
Oh What A Lovely War chronicles the events of the First World War through songs and documents of the period, first produced in 1963 by Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop. The whole team participated in detailed research into the period and in the creative task of bringing their material to life in theatrical terms. The result is an entertainment which has won the acclaim of audiences worldwide, and has become a classic of modern theatre. In 1969 the film version became a popular success in its own right.
With classic war time songs such as ‘I’ll Make A Man of You’, ‘Goodbye-ee’ and ‘Adieu La Vie’, this co-production between the Youth and Community Theatre companies promises to be a thoughtful, energetic and entertaining revival of this stunning historical musical.
‘A production of the first importance in the history of post-war theatre in Britain.’ New Statesman
